I have published several products on Teachers Pay Teachers:

Teaching Companion for Towers Falling (novel by Jewell Parker Rhodes)

Teaching Companion for GHOST BOYS (novel by Jewell Parker Rhodes)

I am currently creating a Teaching Companion for Black Brother Black Brother, by Jewell Parker Rhodes, hardcover released on 3/3/2020. It will be available at in my TpT store in a few weeks.

Author Jewell Parker Rhodes liked my Towers Falling Companion enough that she asked me to create the Teaching Companion for her novel GHOST BOYS. It was a joy to work with and for her.

My journey to meet author Jewell Parker Rhodes

After ten months of working with a booking  agent, I was able to secure a commitment for a visit to my middle school from author Jewell Parker Rhodes. Her message was an inspirational and empowering message for our not only students

During her visit, Jewell shared that,  “…one of the things about my books is that I may take you through horror, but I will always get you to affirmation, I will always take you to love, because that is the only way to live a good life, that is the only way to make our nation stronger.”

“In children’s literature, I define diversity as the celebration of  unique characters, a celebration of their heritage and culture, and their exterior and  interior selves with the deepest sense of empathy and humanity.”

Ms Rhodes shared her belief that everyone should write, because it is through writing that we are able to more deeply understand ourselves and those around us.  Diverse books with compassion and empathy can reaffirm that we are all kin.

Jewell Parker Rhodes is the author of books for middle-grade readers, including the The New York Times bestseller Ghost Boys (2018) and the 2011 Coretta Scott King Honor Book Ninth Ward (the first book in the Louisiana Girls Trilogy). Her other middle-grade novels are Sugar, Bayou Magic, and Towers Falling, as well as five adult novels. Towers Falling is a novel that everyone in our building read two years ago, and has since become a tradition for all sixth graders to read the novel each September.

Jewell earned a Master’s degree and a Doctor of Arts from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh. She lives with her husband in San Jose, California, along with two toy sheepdogs and a cat. She’s the proud mother of a daughter and a son, and the very proud grandmother of a young granddaughter.

Jewell has a way of making everyone she is talking with, be it sitting next to you, or speaking from a podium to a large crowd, feel like you are her dear friend. Her joy for everyone and life around her is infectious, and welcoming. One of those times I will forever cherish!
